I think Timothy says it best.

'What's new here? Well, Brian still works here, L and W got married, the boss has me making instruments, I'm still not making any money, the store is moving, and I still don't have a girlfriend.'

And, later, 'I don't know. I'm doing an experiment in my mind by not thinking about it.'

I don't know when this happened, but Timothy got cynical.
